The chemical code for attracting Culex mosquitoes

چکیده

Mosquitoes use chemical codes to locate and discriminate among vertebrate hosts obtain a blood meal. Recent advances have allowed for the identification of used by mosquitoes humans from other hosts. Humans are incidental “dead-end” West Nile virus, which is maintained in an enzootic cycle, primarily through its transmission between infected birds Culex mosquitoes. Host-seeking attracted odor chicken, sentinel traps monitor virus transmission. Using combined gas chromatography electroantennography mass spectrometry we identify blend volatile organic compounds present chicken emanates, including mostly salient bioactive previously identified human emanates. Reverse and Conventional Chemical Ecology Approaches for the Development of Oviposition Attractants for Culex Mosquitoes

Synthetic mosquito oviposition attractants are sorely needed for surveillance and control programs for Culex species, which are major vectors of pathogens causing various human diseases, including filariasis, encephalitis, and West Nile encephalomyelitis. We employed novel and conventional chemical ecology approaches to identify potential attractants, which were demonstrated in field tests to b...

Chemical detection of the predator Notonecta irrorata by ovipositing Culex mosquitoes.

We tested the oviposition response of Culex mosquitoes to the predator Notonecta irrorata in an outdoor artificial pool experiment employing equal numbers of control and predator pools. There was a strong oviposition avoidance by Culex of Notonecta pools; 83% of egg rafts were found in control pools during the period in which Notonecta were present. After removing Notonecta, mosquitoes continue...

DsRed2 transient expression in Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes

Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes have been successfully genetically modified only once, despite the efforts of several laboratories to transform and establish a stable strain. We have developed a transient gene expression method, in Culex, that delivers plasmid DNA directly to the mosquito haemolymph and additional tissues. We were able to express DsRed2 fluorescent protein in adult Cx. quinqu...

Pyrethroid resistance in Culex pipiens mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes within the Culex pipiens complex are widely distributed and important in the transmission of many human diseases. Insecticides, pyrethroids in particular, remain a mainstay for control of these important vectors. In this paper we review what is known about the levels, mechanisms and fitness costs of pyrethroid resistance in Cx. pipiens. Pyrethroid resistance in Cx. pipiens is a globa...
